From the end of an era to state of the art, Hull's historic Fruit Market finally moves home after operating from the city centre for more than 200 years.
The new location had to be something special. The relocation of Hull's historic Wholesale Fruit Market is pivotal to the success of the regeneration of the city's marina area, having been earmarked as a potential redevelopment site for many years. This critical move, which ends years of uncertainty due to the threat of CPOs allows the continued trade of one of the UK's oldest markets, retains around 200 jobs and continues the well known and well loved trade in Hull of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers that many people have come to rely upon.
ispace facilitated the move and development of Priory Market, a brand new, state of the art facility. By working with Hull City Council, Hull Citybuild and most importantly the traders themselves, ispace was able to develop a site that met with all of the relevant criteria. The 70,000sq ft market built on a 4 acre site, comprises 12 units which will house the businesses wholesaling fruit, vegetables and flowers. Its location, on the west of the city centre with easy access to the A63 and M62, and on a purposefully designed and built business park, will be a more efficient working environment for wholesale businesses, designed specifically for their needs.
With all traders able to move together as one community, continuity of trade and existing jobs will be secured, and with purpose built premises the traders fully expect the market to flourish. Hull's Humber Street Fruit Market was a unique trade location being only one of two working street markets in the country and holds many special memories, however the new Priory Market holds the key to the survival and future growth of the fruit market trade and the regeneration of the Humber Quays area.
